RE: Lonely and down

Yes, it's me with the knee problems. I took an anti cancer med for 5 years following cancer and that speeded up the joint problems. I can have both done at one time but like your wife, I'm hoping that repairing one knee will take some of the pressure off the other. My Mom had one replaced at 74 and never had to have the other one done. I'll be anxiously waiting to hear about your wife's progress. She'll get a lot of emotional support from the members of the knee site and a lot of advise on exercising and coping! I hope she'll be able to continue physical therapy until she's independent and mobile. I can't wait to go walking again. I use a scooter now to get to water aerobics and that helps my mood as much as my movement.

RE: Lonely and down

Thanks Mike. I can read between the lines and tell what a sense of relief you have after the good evaluation. I'm so happy for you and Ginny. I can't wait to be mobile and free of restrictions. I have a Travelscoot now to get me out and about but it's a stop gap, not a solution.

RE: Lonely and down

Mike and Ginny, you're on the road to healing now and it's the beginning of new memories and hopefully more mobility. The rehab is a necessary bridge to cross but ya'll can do this. There is a wonderful support group on the web for knee patients called on our feet-joint replacement. I'll be having both knees replaced within the next year so I won't be far behind ya.
P.S. Buy her chocolate!

RE: Sugar is sick

When my sick puppy won't eat I hand feed her little chips of ice and she politely accepts it and will gradually eat more and more of it. Hope this will help. We will be praying for you and Sugar.

RE: counter surfing

My little liver challenged Aussie is only half the size she should be at 11 mo. but she can hang her paws over the edge of the counter and sniff and she is almost strong enough to lift herself up. Maybe being short will keep her out of this trouble because she finds plenty at her level. I will get the tape if she grows any more.

RE: Scared dog

Does she have a favorite blanket, pillow or pet bed that you could take in there with you each time you let her go in with you? Could you feed her in there for a couple of days? Here's hoping she learns to be comfortable in it.

RE: Is this unusual?

Back in the 60s we traveled From Kansas to Texas several times with our windows down in an old VW and our parakeet got to where he'd make the swishing sound of passing under an underpass and he'd duck down. When we'd get home he would do it over and over. Swish and duck, etc. It was funny to watch. No, we weren't hippies, just poor college students.

RE: Fritos Corn Chips

If you ever toured the Frito-Lay factory you'd know what a dog's feet and greasy Fritos have in common......dirt. You think with that national secret in my brain I'd give up Fritos but sometimes I give in. :S

Little Lizzi likes the Animal Planet. Big Willow just watches the kitchen hoping for food.

RE: Pet things we learn the hard way!

Don't put real candy canes on the Christmas tree unless you want your beautiful Sheltie to have pink fur on her mouth and chest.

RE: Play Barking

Wow, everybody. I am not talking about a bark that means fun and play. My pup plays, "cheerfully" barks and plays with me all the time but when I tell her no and she barks and comes toward me like she's going to get me I put her on her side and hold her for a few seconds. It is a gentle, soft correction and nothing hateful or dangerous for her. This is nothing compared to what my 71 lb Aussie does to her to pin her down and teach her who is boss. She gets praise for appropriate behavior and is never, never mistreated. This pup has had a rough start in life with a liver shunt and several near death weekends and some of her behavior is caused by toxins in her brain but she is getting better and behaving better all the time. This little one is a valued member of our family.

RE: Play Barking

My 10 mo. old pup does the same thing but it is getting better. The Dog Whisperer said it was a sign of aggression, not play and to pin the dog down until they're calm. In fact, I've done it so much that sometimes she'll lay herself down when she sees me coming. It's hard not to laugh but I don't want an aggressive dog around so I'll keep trying to keep her calm.

RE: Keeping Dog cool in car

I am afraid there is no safe, healthy way for you, the boys and dog to travel because of the distance and the age of the children. Is there a Granny or friend who could make the trip with you who could share driving and child care duties? Driving with young children is not easy under the best of conditions.
Good luck with your move.

RE: Chloie acting like she has "mental problems??" help, please!

My little Aussie has a shunt around her liver and you have described some of the extreme behaviors caused by toxins in her intestines, i.e. the darting, blindness and abnormal fears. With her current regimen of meds and rx foods she is doing well most of the time.
I would take your dog to the vet for a good check-up asap.

RE: Pride Mobility Scooters

I purchased the Travelscoot and I love how easy it is to fold up and transport in the back seat. Travelscoot has a good web site if you want to look it up. It weighs 49 lbs. It's fast and very stable.

RE: Welts on puppy....

I had a dog with nagging skin disorders and then we found out she was allergic to our St. Augustine variety of carpet grass. We would rinse her off every evening in the shower and dust her with a little baking soda....weird but it worked to soothe the scratching.

RE: Need advice on new disability situation and rigs.

Your daughter's rehab doctors and hospital social workers should be able to help you with selecting the best wheelchairs for her. Your family has a lot to adapt and learn but you can do it. Hopefully rehab resourses will improve her situation.

RE: TMJ

After breaking and cracking countless teeth I was told I had to wear a mouthpiece at night and now I can't sleep without it. I wake up so much more rested, snore less, no headaches and earaches. I've had the same device for 8 years and I take it each time I go for a cleaning and make sure the fit is still appropriate for my bite.
